Platycercus eximius, Eastern Rosellas are bright multi-coloured medium-sized parrots found in eastern and south-eastern Australia including Tasmania, in open forests, woodlands, grasslands, parks and suburban gardens. Unique in the parrot world due to the black scalloping on their feathers. They are active, gregarious, intelligent, noisy birds that communicate with a variety of whistles, chirps and screeches. Mainly feed on the ground eating seeds, fruits, flowers and insects.

Rosella’s live in pairs or small family groups. They are monogamous, mate for life and are close and affectionate. The female chooses and prepares a nesting site, usually a hollow in a eucalyptus tree but sometimes in a nest-box. The male feeds her while she incubates the eggs and they both feed the young. Seen as a symbol of fertility, beauty, devotion, love, hope, good fortune and the ability to rise above challenging life circumstances.

Care instructions: do not wear swimming or bathing.
