Caladenia flava, the Cowslip orchid is a tuberous, perennial plant found in south-western W.A. in a variety of habitats and soil types. It has a large, single hairy leaf with purple markings on the underside and produces stunning, bright yellow flowers with cream tones and crimson spots from July to December. Each stem is around 25cm tall and carries up to four small flowers.
These orchids are fairly common and can often be found in extensive colonies made up of hundreds of plants. Their common name comes from the resemblance to the bright yellow Cowslip flower (Primula veris) that is native to Europe and Asia. They are seen as a symbol of inner contentment, optimism, positivity, vitality, joy, happiness and new beginnings.
